Types of Clothes BJDs Can Wear
One of the biggest advantages of the BJD hobby is that you can customize your ball-jointed doll in any way you want. And clothing is no exception – you can dress your BJDs in whatever style you want.
However, when it comes to choosing clothing for your doll, you need to take a few things into consideration. For example, what’s the purpose of your BJD? Do you want to take it out with you a lot or do you want it just for display?
So let’s talk about different types of fabrics recommended for different uses of your BJDs.
Just remember this rule of thumb – don’t wait too long to change the clothes or they might stain your BJD.
Choosing Appropriate Fabric for Your BJDs
The very first thing you should take into consideration when choosing your BJD clothing is what’s its purpose. Are you choosing clothes that look pretty and want to have it up on display or are you looking for clothes that can go through some wear and tear?
Every Day BJD Clothing
If your doll is one you feel comfortable with taking around with you, then you’ll need to choose a fabric that’s practical and you can easily wash it. So in this case, cotton or polycotton fabric clothing would work the best, because these types of fabrics are easily cared for.
You are going to want to buy clothes that are affordable and can be easily replaced. Everyday BJD clothing are clothing pieces that you don’t mind if it gets a little soiled and will need to take a plunge into the washer.
Display BJD Clothing
When creating BJDs for display purposes, there are different routes you can take- you can customize your doll with any type of clothes made of any kind of material. In this case, pretty much any fabric is good to use and it’s completely up to you and your personal preferences.
But you need to keep one thing in mind if you’re sewing the clothes yourself. To get the best possible fit and look for your BJD, you should choose a lightweight fabric so it can drape and lay perfectly on the doll’s body.
There are many places that have very exclusive outfits and some are even limited edition. Another option is to get someone to custom make you clothes to fit the character of your display doll. Either route you take just be prepared to hand over some major cash.
Price Ranges for BJD Clothes
In general, the BJD hobby isn’t cheap, and it applies to clothing as well. But if you sew the clothing yourself, you can drastically minimize your expenses. Unfortunately I was not blessed with the skills to make clothes for my dolls and I have to look to purchasing them instead.
If you are in the same boat as me, you can also find good deals on BJD clothing offered by different online stores, which I’ll list just below this section. Stores vary with their prices and even second hand clothing prices can differ too.
Speaking of price ranges for BJD clothes, they can also vary depending on what size you are looking for.
Just to get an idea, you can buy Jeans for BJD slim MSD (Minifee) for $35 on Etsy, while Alice Collection has some jeans for around $20. But the opposite can happen to where I have found cheaper items on Etsy than some name brand clothes.
Where to Find BJD Clothes
So you already know to choose different clothing fabrics for different BJD uses and wonder where to find the clothing itself. I’ve got your back. In this section, you’ll find multiple online stores that sell high-quality clothing for any type or size of BJDs.
Let’s dive right in!
My go-to places when it comes to buying BJD clothes are Etsy or Alice’s Collection. On Etsy you can find tons of BJD artists over there, selling unique, handmade pieces of clothing. While the prices on Etsy range quite a bit, you can still find some discounts or low-priced sellers that still produce high-quality items.
On that flip side we have a BJD distributor, which is Alice’s Collection that sells clothing made by bigger companies. There is a great selection there and you can even find accessories on the site.
But Etsy and Alice’s Collection aren’t the only places I shop for BJD clothes. There are so many great online stores selling excellent pieces of BJD clothing.
Here’s the list of some of my favorite online stores that sell BJD clothing:
- Alice Collections– is one of the best marketplaces online offering a great variety of BJD clothes and accessories.
- Dolk USA– this website combines a bunch of companies that sell BJD clothes in one place.
- Den of Angels – has a huge variety of BJD clothes and frequently offers discounts and great deals.
- Angelesque
- Luts
- TTYA
- Nine9Style
- Little Monica
- The Junky Spot
- Fabric Friends
- Dollmore
Other than the online stores mentioned above, I’d also highly recommend checking out hobby forums or Facebook groups. Especially look out for Facebook groups that have a marketplace section, where people are allowed to list their items for sale. People in these groups usually want to get rid of the used clothing quickly and would offer fairly low prices.
I actually created a Facebook group called BJD Addicts and there we have a second hand market and a feedback page too!
Another alternative to finding BJD clothes is to figure out what play dolls could fit your ball-jointed doll and then buying them.
For example:
- Many ⅙-scale YOSDs can wear Barbie clothing
- 1/12 BJDs can wear Monster High
- Many ⅓-scale SD BJDs can wear American Girl doll shirts and skirts
In order to find out what would work for you, I highly recommend you take the exact measurements of your BJD. You can most probably find this information on the manufacturer/dealer’s website. Alternatively, you can google the name of your BJD and find its measurements, or measure the doll yourself. And the play doll measurements are usually available on sites that sew the clothing.
Some BJD creators would also recommend eBay or Aliexpress. However, I’d suggest you keep an eye to identify any illegitimate or fraudulent sellers there may be on the platform. Sadly a lot of recast dolls are sold there and they are even starting to copy clothing and shoe designs from other artists as well.
