Small BJD Artists

Depths Dolls

When I first joined the hobby there was only a select few places to purchase BJDs from. Nowadays there are people that are opening their own shops from different places around the world. I am impressed with the amount of artists out there that are making their own unique, one of a kind dolls! Today in our post we are going to highlight some of these artists.

How to order?

A lot of these artists have their own independent websites with their products on there. There are some artists though that just work through different platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr.

Lilly Cat

Some artists will have a ordering period because they will make a small amount of dolls at a time and release them in batches. Artists will list a order period in which you can order them, and once the buy slots are filled they will not take further orders for that period. Don’t get discouraged if you miss the order time because a lot of artists like to re-release their sculpts again later.

I have also seen some dolls sold through kickstarters as well. In this sales method the artist looks for people to donate to either reserve a slot or will ask for the price of the doll and then you are guaranteed a doll upon completion.

Why choose an artist doll?

The number one reason is to support our community and our artists. Secondly, you can find some incredibly unique dolls available through these artists. A lot of them also offer different colors as well!

Black Cherry Dolls

It’s fantastic to see all these different sculpts and styles of dolls. A lot of these were new to me and I hope that by spreading awareness of them, and highlighting them, will bring them more people and in turn they will make even more amazing dolls!

Are all artist dolls cast in resin?

No not all artist dolls are cast in resin. It is very important that you look to see how the dolls are made when you are looking at them. A lot of the dolls are 3D printed too! Make sure you understand what you are buying before you purchase.

What are the prices like?

Maddybear Dolls

Artist doll prices vary among artists. Some are way cheaper than the price for a standard MSD sized BJD, while others are similar in price to dolls of similar size currently out in the market. Just because they are artist dolls doesn’t mean that the dolls are “cheaper”. A lot of time and work goes into making these dolls, and a lot of these artist dolls are really just run by one person. Therefore the cost will definitely be on par with other BJDs for the most part.

Where are these artists located?

Logan Dolls

There are literally artists popping up all around the world. There are some that come from Spain, France, America, and even the UK. This is something you will really want to pay attention to when buying since it will change the price of shipping depending on where you live in relation to where the artist is. Most artists will tell you what the shipping prices will be so make sure to factor that into your final cost.

Doll heads and bodies?

Something else you want to look at is if whether or not the artist is selling a full doll or if it is just the head. Some artists only make heads and it will be up to you to find out what doll bodies can match. Resin matching can be a little stressful but most artists will let you know what they are compatible with.

Peachy Day Dreams

Personally I think it is really neat to see a body and head from an artist. The bodies among artists are never the same! You are going to want to check their measurements since a lot of artist doll bodies come in MANY different shapes and sizes. So they may be “MSD” sized but they may have larger hips or busts and therefore buying standard MSD clothing might not work. One great thing I have seen on a couple of the artist pages is that they will tell you what clothes can fit on them! I would highly recommend asking others who may own the same artist doll for suggestions for clothes.

Who are some of the small artists out there today?
