Top 5 Most Affordable BJD Companies

I first learned about BJDs through a customer I met while I was cashiering for Office Max. She saw my chopsticks in my hair and asked if I liked anime and if I was into Dollfies. I had no clue as to what she was talking about but I went ahead and googled “Dollfies” and VOLKS popped up.

OMG $600-800 for a doll? I immediately closed the web browser and stepped away from BJDs for a while. Some time passed and curiosity got the better of me and I started looking again…then I found ResinSoul.

This list of affordable companies is not in any particular order and if these aren’t your cup of tea that’s fine. It is always best to go with what you truly want even if you have to save up for it. Yet, if you do fall in love with any of these companies, you can rest assured that you won’t have to pay too much.

1. Doll Family

This company still continue to amaze me with their variety of sculpts to this day. I especially like their bodies they have. They have torsos with 1, 2, and 3 parts to them. Doll Family bodies also have a great feel and weight to them which I think helps them to be more stable when standing and sitting.

When you shop for them you will notice there is a Doll Family A and a Doll Family H. They are led with different artists on both lines and so you will notice some differences in sculpts and bodies offered.

Another plus to Doll Family is that they offer additional parts for sale. They have a variety of extra hands and feet to choose from.

As far as the pricing goes you can get a 1/3 doll for around $300 which is lower than the average price for a doll in that size range. Better yet, there is always frequent sales and offers through distributor sites for them. One distributor that offers them is Alice’s Collection. I actually purchased 2 of my Doll Family dolls through them and had zero problems.

2. ResinSoul

If you are looking for a very affordable resin doll in almost any current size out there right now, ResinSoul has got you covered. They literally have small dolls at 15cm in height all the way to the big ones at 72cm. Do you like fantasy type dolls. BAM! They got centaurs, elves, dragons, half cat people, and more!

ResinSoul also offers a wide variety of resin colors too!

I personally love my light tan doll I got from them and the color was even and clean.

To sweeten the deal the price ceiling only goes to $260. This is crazy since most companies start their 1/6 scale dolls at $300.

What’s the catch? ResinSoul dolls usually need some work to make them really ideal. I have had to tighten the strings after the come in because they do come in a bit loose. For my ResinSoul Kai I actually wired his body and hot glue sueded his joints to help him keep good solid poses. The were all simple fixes and after I did them my dolls were great!

The other odd thing is the company photos…check out the ResinSoul Gang.

There is so many potential in these dolls its just odd that the company photos are just not up to par. This is why I think a lot of people have weird feelings about them because they appear to be “cheap” dolls. I really don’t feel that way at all and still love my ResinSoul dolls I own and think they look just as great as any of my other dolls.

3. Doll Leaves

This is a very cool company with some very interesting looking sculpts. I think they are dolls that have a lot of hidden potential too. What I would like to direct you to is their 1/4 scale dolls. Their bodies are so light and delicate looking. Most of their 1/4 scale dolls are only in the $150 dollar range and offer different parts too!

They are a bit on the slim side but you can pretty much put them in most clothing that is labeled for 1/4 scale dolls. If you are person that likes to lean more towards the 1/4 scale sized dolls I would definitely give them a look.

4. Angel of Dream

Angel of Dream is yet another company that will save you some money especially if you are looking at the larger scaled dolls. Their average size dolls are listed anywhere from $265 to $130 depending on what size you get.

One of the really amazing things about their company is that they offer a large 90cm doll! They are priced at around $580 which could easily be the price of a 1/3 scale doll for other companies.

If you are looking for a 1/6 scale doll you can expect to pay around $130 which is still below the average price for dolls in that range.

5. Hujoo (DISCONTINUED)

EDIT: So to my knowledge this company has now cease to exist. However there are some floating around in the second hand market. I would like to keep them on the list in the event that they do come back.

I know it seems like I am constantly praising this company but you really have to appreciate the fact that they are one of the first and few companies that thought of different things for BJDs that were out of the box. They experimented with gear joints, making their dolls out of ABS, and even tried embedding a silicone disk system into the doll bodies themselves!

Hujoo offers a wide range of 1/4 and 1/6 scale sized dolls. The have ventured into large 1/3 scale dolls but their sculpts are very limited. The price range is phenomenal with doll prices ranging from $25 to $260 depending on what size you get.

One additional thing to note is that it seems like they are actually in a hiatus at the moment. Myself along with other collectors are hoping to see that they come back and continue to offer these amazing dolls.

Final suggestions

There is a vast amount of BJD companies out there to choose from. Many small artists have started their BJD lines as well so there are a lot to consider. I think my biggest advice I can give is that you really need to research what you WANT. After seeing some of these affordable companies maybe it will spark something that you want. If you didn’t see anything you like then continue your hunt! Your dolly of your dreams is out there and it may take some time to save for it but trust me…it will be well worth it!
