Explanation of BJDs and Restringing One of the biggest BJDs companies originated in Japan but have since gained popularity around the world. These dolls are highly customizable, allowing owners to change their wigs, clothes, eyes, and makeup to create unique looks for each doll. Having quality tools will not only help you execute the process of restringing more efficiently but also ensure you don't cause any damage or stress to the doll's joints. Basic Tools String (type, length, and thickness) When restringing BJDs, choosing the right type of string is crucial. You can also use other strings like streamer ribbon string (like for attaching to balloons) or any other sturdy string. I wouldn't recommend yarn or strings that are similar to that because it is flimsy and will not thread easily. Advanced Tools Forceps When holding strings in place, forceps are the tool to use. They can clamp down on pieces while you work on other parts of your doll. Forceps can clamp down on elastic cord to help keep it in place while attaching legs, arms, hands, or feet. They are a huge helper in restringing and should be in every doll owners kit. Tips for Successful Restringing Measure Twice, Restring Once: Properly measure string length One of the most important tips for successful BJD restringing is to make sure you have measured your string correctly before cutting it. Measure twice (or three times!) before cutting so that you don't waste string by having it be too short or have excess that could get in the way during the restringing process. Always make sure to double-check your measurements against the original length of the string that came with your BJD. Lay Out Your Parts When restringing your doll it is very easy to confuse all the pieces. Make sure you lay out your pieces so you are able to determine which are left parts and which are right parts. I suggest laying them out and keeping them in line. Most modern doll companies will now label the inside of parts with a L or a R.
