There are 3 main ways to buy BJDs.
- Direct from company
- Distributor
- Secondhand market
Each method has their own ups and downs. The most important thing you should do before buying a BJD is research, research, research. You don’t want to run the risk of purchasing a recast doll (counterfeit version of the real doll) so you will want to make sure you get your doll from a legitimate place. Please check out my article “Planning on buying a BJD” for more info on where to start!
Direct from company:
This simply means that you are going straight to the source. For example, if you are looking for a Ringdoll BJD you can go to their website and purchase it from there.
BJD Collectasy has a running list of BJD companies. The list grows and changes over time. There are some companies that are no longer around that are still on the list.
Distributors:
When you order from a distributor this means you are getting it from a third party that has permission to sell the doll from the company.

Secondhand Market:
Buying dolls from the second hand market can be rewarding and risky. You have a chance of finding dolls that are no longer in production or dolls that are cheaper than buying them brand new.
The risk comes in that there are recast dolls in the BJD market place. You also need to be cautious of who you are buying from and their reputation within the marketplace. Always look up feedback for sellers and ask for plenty of photos and full descriptions of the doll being sold.
