Introduction
Ball-jointed dolls (BJDs) are highly detailed and posable dolls that have become increasingly popular in recent years. BJDs are typically made of resin or other high-quality materials, with each doll consisting of multiple parts that are strung together with elastic string.
Over time, the strings may become worn or damaged, resulting in loose or unstable joints that can make the doll difficult to pose. To maintain the structural integrity and poseability of a BJD, it is important to restring the doll every so often.
Restringing involves removing and replacing old strings with new ones, which can be a delicate and challenging process. It is essential to have the right tools and supplies on hand in order to successfully restring your BJD without causing damage.
Explanation of BJDs and Restringing
One of the biggest BJDs companies originated in Japan but have since gained popularity around the world. These dolls are highly customizable, allowing owners to change their wigs, clothes, eyes, and makeup to create unique looks for each doll.
Their appeal lies in their artistry and their ability to be posed like human figures. However, as mentioned earlier, over time the elastic strings used to connect different parts of a BJD can stretch out or break down due to natural wear and tear.
This can cause instability within joints or even hold certain parts together too tightly, hindering articulation. When this happens, it’s recommended you undergo a restringing process for your beloved BJDs.
The Importance of Having The Right Tools For Successful Restringing
Restringing requires patience and precision since there is little room for error when working on such delicate dolls as BJDs. Having improper tools may lead you towards accidental damage during this process which could ruin your precious collectable.
Having quality tools will not only help you execute the process of restringing more efficiently but also ensure you don’t cause any damage or stress to the doll’s joints. Investing in essential and optional tools will make restringing a breeze, and detailed information will be provided within this article.
Basic Tools
String (type, length, and thickness)
When restringing BJDs, choosing the right type of string is crucial. There are several sizes and tensions of elastic strings that can be used for BJDs.
Depending on the doll will determine what elastic cord to use. Larger dolls need a stronger tension cord to hold their pieces together.
It’s recommended to measure your doll from head to toe and add 20% of its length for tying knots. The thickness of the string should also match the weight and size of the doll’s limbs.
S-hooks
The next tool needed for restringing BJDs are S-hooks which are used as connectors between the string and doll joints. S-hooks are shaped like the letter “S”.
It’s important when using these hooks that they fit properly on your chosen string size and are able to fully close around the joint without any gaps. This ensures that there will be no slippage during posing.
Pliers (flat-nose and round-nose)
Pliers come in handy when tightening or loosening hooks or pulling out elastic from pieces. Flat-nose pliers have flat jaws, which allow you to grip and hold items securely. Round-nose pliers have rounded tips perfect for making loops or bending hooks.
When selecting pliers, it’s important to choose those made of durable materials such as stainless steel or carbon steel. Additionally, make sure the tip of the plier is small enough to grab onto small hooks and large enough to provide a secure grip. Just be careful when using them around your dolls as the tools can scratch the resin.
Scissors
Sharp scissors are essential for cutting your string to the correct length and trimming any excess thread after restringing. It’s recommended to use small, sharp scissors that allow for precision cuts without damaging any parts. Dull scissors can crush or fray the edges of your string, leading to an unstable hold on your doll’s joints.
Overall, having these basic tools at hand will make all the difference when restring your BJDs. From choosing the right type of string and size of hooks to having pliers and scissors that can cut through materials with ease – every tool has its role in making a successful restringing process possible.
String
Last, a very simple tool that can go a long way is string. You can use plastic string like the kind that is commonly used for pony bead activities to help thread elastic through your pieces.
You can also use other strings like streamer ribbon string (like for attaching to balloons) or any other sturdy string. I wouldn’t recommend yarn or strings that are similar to that because it is flimsy and will not thread easily.
Advanced Tools
Forceps
When holding strings in place, forceps are the tool to use. They can clamp down on pieces while you work on other parts of your doll. Forceps can clamp down on elastic cord to help keep it in place while attaching legs, arms, hands, or feet. They are a huge helper in restringing and should be in every doll owners kit.
Tips for Successful Restringing
Measure Twice, Restring Once: Properly measure string length
One of the most important tips for successful BJD restringing is to make sure you have measured your string correctly before cutting it. Measure twice (or three times!) before cutting so that you don’t waste string by having it be too short or have excess that could get in the way during the restringing process. Always make sure to double-check your measurements against the original length of the string that came with your BJD.
Lay Out Your Parts
When restringing your doll it is very easy to confuse all the pieces. Make sure you lay out your pieces so you are able to determine which are left parts and which are right parts. I suggest laying them out and keeping them in line. Most modern doll companies will now label the inside of parts with a L or a R. If they do not have that marked you can also use a water color pencil and mark the inside of the parts yourself.
Conclusion
Having the right tools is essential for successful BJD restringing. Basic tools like pliers, scissors, string, forceps, and hooks are essential.
Investing in quality tools will ensure the long-term maintenance of your beloved BJDs – so get what you need! With practice and patience, BJD restringing can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
